A Decade of Connecting Alumni from Canada in China

March 18, 2013

Beijing - Celebrating the start of it’s 10th year, the Canadian Alumni Network (CAN) welcomed 150 fellow alumni of all walks of life to The Annual Canadian Alumni Network Spring Cocktail in Beijing at The Four Seasons Hotel Beijing.

The CAN's Founder, Richard N. Liu said, “As an UBC Alumni, I'm proud of the quality of education received, but an even prouder Canadian to have been given the opportunity to nurture the growth and awareness of our alumni in China.” This rang true by the many alumni who had graduated from across Canada, and gathered under one roof tonight to network with alumni from their respective provinces and business sectors. Among one of the special guests, Dr. James Lee, Vice-Provost (International) of Queens University, engaged many Queens Alumni, and noted that Queen's largest number of international undergraduate students come from China.

During the evening’s proceedings, a special plaque was presented to Canadian Ambassador, Mr. Guy Saint-Jacques, to recognize His Excellency as the CAN's Honourary Chair. Ambassador Saint-Jacques congratulated Mr. Liu and his fellow volunteer Alumni Representatives for all their work in bringing the alumni closer together, and said, “The number of Chinese students studying in Canada is now at over 70,000 representing about 30% of all the international students in Canada. Given education is one of Canada’s core strengths; it is very satisfying to see the value of Canadian education recognized in China and around the world.”

The Canadian Alumni networked with fellow alumni and enjoyed the food, drinks and prizes generously provided by the Four Seasons Hotel Beijing. Two very lucky alumni, Ms. Lucy Li (UoT Alumni) and Mr. Chen Zhang (Beijing’s Concordia Alumni President) won a pair of free tickets each to the Simple Plan Concert the following weekend, which was donated by McGill Alumni, Justin Cancino, of Street Hustle Media Group. Special thanks to our friends at the Canadian Embassy in Beijing; and to fellow Canadians, Mr. Sanjiv Hulugalle, General Manager of the Four Seasons Hotel Beijing; and Chef Rosalyn Ediger, a proud South Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) alumni.

Stay connected with the CAN as there will be more opportunities to network in the coming months.
