Welcoming Ambassador McCallum With Alumni Engagement

June 15, 2017 (Beijing) - A special welcome reception was organized and hosted by The Canadian Alumni Network (CAN) for His Excellency, The Honourable Ambassador John McCallum, this evening at the Four Seasons Beijing, with a fantastic response by 150 Canadian alumni in and around the capital of China.

Mr. Richard N. Liu, Founder of the CAN, remarked that the attendance by so many alumni this evening "is a true testament to the importance of People to People exchange. Our Canadian Alumni Network continues to grow, connecting alumni of Canadian post-secondary institutions and making a richer and well-connected community of over 16000 alumni in China."

Mr. Andy Truong, CAN's Co-Founder added, "With over 120,000 and  increasing Chinese students studying in Canada, the Canadian Alumni Network will continue to work hard to reach out to these future alumni." Together with Mr. Adam Dunnett, UVic's Alumni Chapter Representative and long time friend and advocate of the CAN, they presented Ambassador McCallum with a plaque to formally welcome His Excellency to the CAN as our Honourary Chair, to build stronger ties in education between our two nations. In his speech, Ambassador McCallum said, "Having been here for almost three months, China wants to move forward with Canada. Both countries want to move forward and make real progress together and it takes two to tango."

Following the formal speeches, our dedicated volunteer Alumni Chapter Representatives each came up to congratulate the Ambassador and took a commemorative group photo. With the 150th year of Canada's founding, our alumni guests each received a commemorative Canada 150 pin and had the opportunity to take photos with specialized Canada150 frames provided by the Canadian Embassy in Beijing, while connecting with one another. The importance of alumni engagement was exhibited as the Ambassador and his wife, Nancy, were both immersed in conversation with our alumni throughout the evening. As such, the lucky draws provided by our wonderful Canadian partner hotel will now be drawn on July 1, 2017.

The CAN organizers would like to thank the Canadian Embassy in Beijing and Canadian Consulate Generals around China, our 26 Canadian Post-secondary Institutions across Canada and Asia, and to the Four Seasons Beijing, for their continued support and in making this evening a tremendous success. The CAN sincerely appreciates all our alumni and friends that attended tonight and would like to take this opportunity to wish all our alumni in China a very Happy Canada Day 150!
