The 10th BC Student Send-off in Beijing

July 30, 2017 Beijing - Ten years ago, the inaugural BC Student Send-off was held on May 25, 2008 before the start of the Beijing Summer Games at the BC-Canada Pavilion, with the enthusiastic support of Simon Fraser University, University of British Columbia, and University of Victoria, to connect new students from China headed to BC with knowledge of their destination and advice from BC alumni.

This 10th anniversary event was co-hosted by the BC International Trade Office in Beijing and the Canadian Alumni Network (CAN) with the fantastic participation of Capilano University, Royal Roads University, Simon Fraser University, Thompson Rivers University, University of British Columbia, and University of Victoria; and saw 50 new students from China, their parents, with BC trade and BC alumni representatives in attendance this afternoon.

Kevin Tsui, Managing Director of the BC International Trade and Investment Office, noted that "In 2007, there were only 10,000 Chinese students in BC. And now China is the No.1 source country of international students in BC and more than 40,000 Chinese students are studying in BC right now. These figures prove without a doubt that BC is an ideal education destination for Chinese students. BC’s top-notch educational institutions, proactive study-abroad policy and open attitude to multiculturalism has fostered a first-class academic environment regarded by international students from every corner of the world."

Richard N. Liu, Founder of the Canadian Alumni Network (CAN) said in his opening remarks, "this annual Send-off began as a personal passion to serve our community, engage youth and bridge our two nations." As a proud UBC Alumni, he encouraged students to make sure to stay in BC after graduation, develop people-to-people relationships, and look for opportunities to work while enjoying the sights and sounds of Canada.

Special thanks to all our volunteer BC alumni reps and to all our BC post-secondary institutions throughout the past 10 years, and to our good friends at the BC International Trade office for their continued support and encouragement, as we work to connect and inspire the next generation of future BC alumni for years to come.

We wish the new students all the best with your studies in BC. 祝你们学习进步!
