Canadian Alumni Network Representatives Meet and Greet the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada

October 18, 2013 Beijing - Representatives of the Canadian Alumni Network (CAN) welcomed the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, to Beijing at an Education Partnerships programme during His Excellency's first stop to China.

The Governor General was a professor at various post-secondary institutions in Canada, and had served in administrative roles as Dean of Law at the University of Western Ontario, Principal of McGill University, and President of the University of Waterloo. And as an alumni of Queens, and former president of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada, the Governor General warmly engaged the representatives, sharing his thoughts on education, learning more about the CAN, and even asked The Honourable John Baird Minister of Foreign Affairs, The Honourable Joe Oliver Minister of Natural Resources, Canadian Ambassador Guy Saint-Jacques and our CAN representatives where they graduated from. They proudly stated their Canadian institutions until there was a humourous gasp from everyone when Minister Oliver mentioned he had also graduated from Harvard.

The CAN representatives were invited to a group photo and Canadian Alumni Network founder, Richard N. Liu, thanked the Governor General on behalf of all 26 alumni volunteer representatives, who represent approximately 5000 alumni in China. Just before the signature photo, the Governor General was also present to witness two important partnership signings by Ivey School of Business, Western Ontario University; and Queens University.

The Canadian Alumni Network is celebrating it's 10th anniversary next week and have been fostering public awareness since 2003 that Canadian post-secondary institutions have an influential alumni network in China. And today's event is a testament of that importance and influence to which the network has grown over the past decade, with the continuing cooperation and support of the Canadian Embassy, and in conjunction with the hard work and dedication by all 26 alumni volunteer representatives based in Beijing and the alumni associations across Canada.
